The ZSC was established in 1980 to provide Command and Staff training for officers of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA). It started running courses in November 1980. After extensive studies on staff requirements, the Intermediate Staff Course gave way to the Command and Staff Course (CSC) in 1986. The CSC started enrolling a few officers from the Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) leading to the establishment of an Air Faculty at the ZSC towards the end of 1995. The CSC was further transformed to become the (JCSC) in January 1996. It has been run as such since then.
