HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
- The study of the art and science of war has been practised since the beginning of recorded history. We read of military training institutions throughout history. Some of these institutions are better known than others, and some have left an indelible mark on the armed forces of the world.
- As warfare became more sophisticated, an increased demand was placed on commanders and their staff. This brought about the formal training of men and women who had to take the lead in protecting a nation’s right to exist. Many well-known military academic institutions came into existence-to name but a few: Sandhurst, West Point and Potsdam. The need for training in higher command and staff procedures and techniques later led to the creation of Staff Colleges, such as Camberley, Berlin, Fort Leavenworth etc.
- The need to train officers also came into being in Zimbabwe and over the years, saw the establishment of a reputable centre of excellence; the Zimbabwe Staff College (ZSC), located in Harare, Josiah Magama Tongogara Barracks. Like the other establishments, it also has to do with the cultivation and training of young aspirant leaders and their development into more skilled professional commanders and staff officers.
